Aurora

Aurora is a province of the Philippines located in the Central Luzon region. Its capital is Baler and borders, clockwise from the south, the provinces of Quezon, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, and Isabela. To the east of Aurora is the Philippine Sea.

The province of Aurora covers the eastern portion of the Sierra Madre Mountains, hence it is generally mountainous. There are flat lands unevenly distributed throughout the province. Its coastline spans 332 kilometers in length. The municipality of Dingalan, in the south, has the most irregular topography

Aurora's climate is characterized by rainfall that is evenly distributed throughout the year, since Aurora faces the Pacific Ocean and has no barriers to shield it from typhoons coming from the east. Tropical cyclones are also a seasonal occurrence.

Before 1979, Aurora was part of the province of Quezon. Aurora was, in fact, named after Aurora A. Quezon, the wife of Pres. Manuel L. Quezon, the president of the Philippine Commonwealth, after whom the mother province was named.

The majority of the people of Aurora province are lowland Christians, particularly Tagalog in municipalities south of Baler, the capital, and Ilocano in municipalities north of Baler.

There are also pockets of Negritos, called Dumagats. Most Dumagats are living in the hillsides or mountains. They are believed to have result from a fusion of Austronesian and Melaneisan ancestries, and survive from fishing and hunting. There are three kinds of Dumagats in Aurora province, the Umiray Dumagat, Casiguran Dumagat, and the Palanan Dumagat. All three subgroupings have the Bible translated into their languages.

Aurora is blessed with many natural tourist attractions. Its waterfalls, beaches, historic places, lush green mountains and blue ocean waters are stunning, as are the green country pastures and farmlands. Most of these natural attractions remain untainted. In this light, tourism can be considered a potentially important growth industry.
